This course focuses on a study of American literature and the culture from which it has developed. Critical reading and thinking skills are practiced in analytical writing and speech work. Students will become familiar with the work of major American writers and understand the historical, cultural and social influences on their writing. They will improve the skills needed to read deeply, think critically and communicate ideas clearly and confidently. Applying specific critical criteria and using the vocabulary of literary analysis, they will demonstrate the ability to interpret and evaluate complex works of literature.
